It is being called the worst in modern times.

The town of Cludded Cerdan, about 90 miles (150 kilometres) from Mexico City seems to have been worst affected. At least two hundred people there are believe to have been killed, and half the town has been flattened or is in danger of collapsing. Other towns affected include Orizaba, Vera Cruz, Puebla, Tehuacan, Jalapa, and Cordobe.

The earthquake, which struck on Tuesday (28 August) morning before dawn had an estimated magnitude of five-point-five on the Righter scale.

Rescue work has been hindered by heavy rain. The government have ordered the army to take control of the operations. Buildings, in danger of collapse, need to be pulled own, power supplies have to be restored. And there is the danger of disease from the sewers which have been broken open by the earthquake. Many families have been camping out of doors because they are worried about another tremor. Police have been patrolling the streets, and so far there seems to have ben little looting.
