Background: FLORENCE IS STILL CLEANING UP THE MASS OF MUD AND DEBRIS WHICH INUNDATED THE CITY WHEN THE ARNO RIVER BROKE ITS BANKS DURING ITALY'S NATIONAL FLOOD DISASTER EIGHT DAYS AGO. TODAY (SATURDAY) RESCUE WORKERS WERE FIGHTING TO SAVE VILLAGES IN THE SOUTHERN DOLOMITES, LOCATE WINTER SPORTS RESORTS IN THE ALPS AND DAM BREACHES IN DYKES PROTECTING LOW-LYING REGIONS OF THE PO DELTA.

ITALY'S UNDER-SECRETARY FOR EDUCATION, SIGNOR GIOVANNI ELKAN, HAS PLACED THE COST OF OVERALL DAMAGE TO FLORENCE'S WORKS OF ART AT ABOUT 100,000-MILLION LIRE (MORE THAN GBP57-MILLION STERLING).

ABOUT 30 PAINTINGS, INCLUDING CIMABUE'S FAMOUS CRUCIFIXION, HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND ANOTHER 1,200 DAMAGED FROM BEING SUBMERGED IN WATER POT IN HEATING OIL. SIGNOR ELKAN HOPED THAT 50 PER CENT OF THEM MAY BE COMPLETELY RESTORED.

AMONG OTHER LOSSES IN FLORENCE: THE ONLY COMPLETE COLLECTION OF ALL NEWSPAPERS PRINTED IN ITALY SINCE 1860. THE NEWSPAPERS WERE KEPT IN THE CELLARS OF THE ITALIAN NATIONAL LIBRARY, WHERE AN ESTIMATED 200,000 BOOKS AND MANUSCRIPTS WERE DAMAGED.

NEARLY 700 TOWNS AND VILLAGES HAVE BEEN DAMAGED BY THE FLOODS BY BUT NO ASSESSMENT OF TOTAL DAMAGE IS POSSIBLE AT PRESENT.

THE DANGER OF NEW FLOODS IN FLORENCE, WHICH LOOMED ON THURSDAY AS RAIN SWELLED THE LEVEL OF THE RIVER ARNO AGAIN, WAS AVERTED LAST NIGHT AS THE WEATHER CLEARED.
