    ON THEIR FIRST APPOINTMENTS WAS A CALL ON MALAWI'S PRESIDENT NGWAZI DR. KAMUZU BANDA. THE VISIT TOOK PLACE ON MAY 14, 'KAMUZU DAY' - THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICIAL BIRTHDAY. MAYOR LUGONZO AND HIS PARTY WENT TO THE OFFICIAL RESIDENCE AT STATE HOUSE, ZOMBA.

    THERE HE HANDED A LETTER WRITTEN BY KENYA'S PRESIDENT KENYATTA TO DR. BANDA. HE ALSO PRESENTED THE MALAWI LEADER WITH GIFTS FROM THE CITY OF NAIROBI.

    THE MAYOR WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE MAYORESS OF NAIROBI, COUNCILLOR MARGARET KENYATTA - DAUGHTER OF PRESIDENT KENYATTA - BLANTYRE'S MAYOR JOHN KAMWENDO AND MRS. KAMWENDO, AND ACTING SECRETARY FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS MR. J. KACHINGWE.

    THE PRESIDENT IN TURN GAVE GIFTS TO THE MAYOR AND MAYORESS OF NAIROBI, AND TO MISS KENYATTA.

    ON THE DAY BEFORE THEIR CALL ON THE PRESIDENT, THE PARTY HAD TOURED BLANTYRE CITY, VISITING A HOUSE ESTATE AND THE STELLA MARIS TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

    LATER IN THE WEEK, THEY SAW THE SITE OF THE NEW MALAWI CAPITAL IN LILONGWE. AFTERWARDS MAYOR LUGONZO SPOKE AT A CIVIC LUNCHEON GIVEN IN HIS HONOUR BY THE MAYOR OF LILONGWE, MR. TESSEPO.

    THE VISIT, WHICH ENDED ON SUNDAY, FOLLOWED AN INVITATION ISSUED BY DR. BANDA IN SEPTEMBER 1967, WHEN HE VISITED NAIROBI TO OPEN THE KENYA AGRICULTURAL SHOW.
