  • Description

The special military group, set up by last week's Middle East Peace Conference, met for the first time on Wednesday (26 December) for the vital talks on disengaging the Israeli and Egyptian forces along the Suez Canal.
The Israeli and Egyptian military negotiators met for just over an hour and a half in Geneva's Palais Des Nations.
Brigadier Taha El Magdoub, Assistant Chief of Operations, and Colonel Ahmed Fouad Howeidy, a former military attache in London, headed the Egyptian team.
Israel was represented by Major-General Mordechai "Motta" Gur, former paratroop commander and military attache in Washington, and Colonel Dov Sion, son-in-law of Defence Minister Moshe Dayan.
General Ensio Siilasvuo, Finnish Commander of the United Nations Emergency Force sent to the Middle East to oversee the ceasefire in last October's fourth Arab-Israeli war, chaired the meeting.
An official United Nations communique said the meeting had dealt with the "principles of disengagement that will facilitate productive discussions in future meetings."
The negotiators will meet again on Friday (28 December).
