HE BEGAN A SERIES OF VISITS TO SPECIAL ROME CHURCHES KNOWN AS THE LENTEN "STATIONS OF THE CROSS", EACH "STATION" DEPICTING AN INCIDENT OF CHRIST'S ORDEAL AS HE CARRIED HIS CROSS TO CALVARY.

    AT THE CHURCH OF ST. ALESSIO ON THE AVENTINE HILL, LARGE CROWDS WAITED TO SEE POPE JOHN. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN CENTURIES THAT A POPE WAS PRESENT AT A CEREMONY OUTSIDE THE VATICAN ON AN ASH WEDNESDAY.

    THE POPE ALSO WENT IN PROCESSION TO THE ANCIENT BASILICA OF SANTA SABINA WHERE HE WAS MET BY CARDINAL-ELECT MICHAEL BROWNE, IRISH-BORN MASTER-GENERALDO? THE DOMINICAN FRIARS WHO HAVE BEEN IN A CHARGE OF THE CHURCH SINCE THE 13TH CENTURY. AT MORNING MASS IN THE VATICAN, THE POPE HAD HIS FOREHEAD MARKED WITH A CROSS IN ASHES. UNOFFICIAL VATICAN SOURCES SAID THE POPE'S PRIVATE SECRETARY, MSGR. LORIS CAPOVILLA, HAD APPLIED THE ASHES.
