  • Description

The newly-formed Secretariat for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was formally launched on Tuesday (2 October) by President Jomo Kenyatta in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

The aim of UNEP is to form and co-ordinate a global strategy in an attempt to harmonise the demands of industrial development with the need to keep the world a fit place to live in.

Its offices, in a new 28-story building in Nairobi, were formally inaugurated by President Kenyatta who said: "We have but one world and that we must preserve....our efforts must be on a global scale.

The new office is the first U.N. Secretariat to be located in the "Third World". The question of control of pollution is a sensitive one for developing nations, who feel that restraints urged by industrialised nations would hinder their own growth.

The United Nations decided to establish the Secretariat after a meeting in Stockholm last year that agreed on a declaration of principles by which governments will govern the conduct of their environmental affairs.

A transcript of President Kenyatta's remarks follows:

Native performers joined in the ceremonies on Tuesday to mark the opening for the new Separatist, which will be responsible for co-ordinating anti-pollution efforts around the world.

The aim of the new United Nations programme will be to co-ordinate a global strategy to harmonise the demands of industrial development with the need to keep the world a fit place to live in -- thus its nickname, "Earthwatch."
President Jomo Kenyatta was to formally inaugurate the new Secretariat's offices. He and his wife were greeted by Kenyan Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mungai, and the Executive Director of the "Earthwatch" Secretariat, Maurice Strong.

Before the actual ceremony, President Kenyatta inspected a guard of honour mounted by game rangers and forest guards, who wage Kenya's own struggle to protect wild animals from poachers.

The new U.N. Secretariat is the first to be located in the "Third World", a fact that President Kenyatta took note of in his remarks at the opening ceremony.

The Secretariat of the United Nations Environment Programma was officially inaugurated by the unfurling of the United Nations flag by President Kenyatta.
