    PROJECT STARGAZER, A MANNED BALLOON FLIGHT TO 81,500 FEET TO LOOK AT THE STARS FROM ABOVE THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE, WAS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY ON FRIDAY.

    THE BALLOON WAS PREPARED AND LAUNCHED FROM HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE IN NEW MEXICO, U.S.A. CAPTAIN JOSEPH KITTINGER OF THE AMERICAN AIR FORCE, AND MR WILLIAM WHITE, A CIVILIAN ASTRONOMER, BOTH SEALED IN PRESSURISED SPACE SUITS, PREPARED TO SPEND ALMOST 24 HOURS IN THE GONDOLA OF THE 200 FEET BALLOON.

    AT THE END OF THEIR FLIGHT THEY REPORTED THAT THE STARS APPEARED TO STOP TWINKLING AT BETWEEN 30,000 AND 35,000 FEET. THE TEMPERATURE INSIDE THE GONDOLA WAS -24 DEGREES CENTIGRADE.
