Background: In Paris, thousands of students and teachers demonstrated on Monday (13 November) against the proposed education budget for 1979. The new budget proposes severe cutbacks in physical education and more than a thousand graduates in the subject have been told that there is no money to provide jobs for them.
SYNOPSIS: The protest march took place in Paris as the education budget was being presented to the National Assembly. The demonstrators, representing high school teachers, university lecturers and students, marched under a common banner which demanded "quality education for all". The area hardest-hit is physical education. Next May, more than two thousand university students will graduate with degrees in the field, but half of them will not have jobs to go to.
The demonstrators insist the physical health of the students themselves will suffer, and that special sports programmes for the handicapped will be cut, negating their schedules of body-strengthening and rehabilitation. The protestors demand that the Minister of Youth and Sport, Monsieur Jean-Pierre Soisson, spend the proposed saving of sixty million francs (14 million dollars) to provide jobs for the one thousand impending graduates, who diplo???s are in danger of proving worthless.
