Once upon a time, a punt, a portable radio and pretty girl were all that were needed for a pleasant day out on the river.
Roll I and II are showing in several shots and angles different boots in the Eiskanal which was the line for this event. Many difficulties had to be overcome and many of the boys capsiced. The decision is tomorrow, but FOX and ITN shipped so we did it.
We have on our film the first three who are with 99% under the tomorrows winners. There are
138 (start No.) Heiz BIELIG, East Germany
132 Manfred VOGT, Western Germany 151 Rolf JAHNISCHEN, Eastern Germany
I did the Herren Faltboot F I competition where three British boys were on route.

Background: Once upon a time, a punt, a portable radio and pretty girl were all that were needed for a pleasant day out on the river.
But then the sportsmen were let loose on the scene and the whole picture has changed. Now the keen boatman seeks out the roughest stretch of water, get a well-scaled cayak canoe, and throws himself in to the boiling waters.
Just to show how good they, the best of Europe's canoe slalom experts got together on the Eiskanal in Germany recently to fight out the world championship.
Watched by a hard crowd who braved the pouring rain to travel to the town of Augsburg in Bavaria, the rough water riders showed off their best party tricks in the tumbling waters.
Their antics need no commentary - just to say that a little local knowledge went a long way for West Germany took the first three places.
