Background: ON THE SOUTHERN TIP OF MALAYA, THERE'S FEAR AND UNCERTAINTY AMONG THE LOCAL FISHERMEN AND VILLAGERS AS A RESULT OF INDONESIA'S CONFRONTATION POLICY AGAINST, MALAYSIA.

MALAYSIAN SECURITY FORCES ARE PATROLLING THE AREA NEAR THE TINY VILLAGE OF KUKUP, A PREDOMINANTLY CHINESE FISHING SETTLEMENT, BUILT ON STILTS IN THE MIDST OF MUDDY MANGROVE SWAMPS.FOLLOWING REPORTS FROM VILLAGERS THAT A NUMBER OR ARMED UNIFORMED MEN LANDED FROM THE SEA AND MOVED INLAND.

MEMBERS OF THE FORCE GUARD A SMALL MALAY VILLAGE ABOUT FOUR MILES INLAND, WITH THE DUAL OBJECT OF REASSURING THE VILLAGE DWELLERS AND SEARCHING FOR THE ARMED INTRUDERS.OTHER UNITS OF THE FORCE ARE SWEEPING THE SURROUNDING SWAMP COUNTRY AND LAYING AMBUSHES IN THE HOPE OF TRAPPING THEM.

HOWEVER, OFFICIALS IN KUALA LUMPUR, THE MALAYSIAN CAPITAL, HAVE NOT CONFIRMED THAT ARMED MEN HAVE LANDED IN THE AREA.

MEANWHILE, SEVERAL THOUSAND KUKUP FISHERMEN ARE IDLE BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN FRIGHTENED AWAY FROM THEIR FISHING GROUNDS BY INDONESIAN GUNBOATS AND UNIDENTIFIED PIRATES.A FEW WEEKS AGO, ONE INDONESIAN GUNBOAT CHASED A FISHING BOAT TO WITHIN A FEW HUNDRED YARDS OF KUKUP.

THE VILLAGE FACES ACROSS THE SEA TOWARDS SUMATRA, FORTY MILES AWAY.SMUGGLING IS A TRADITIONAL PRACTICE IN THE AREA BUT THE EVEN THIS HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO A HALT FOR FEAR OF INTERFERENCE ON THE JOURNEY ACROSS THE MALACCA STRAITS.
