  • Description

THE QUEEN ELIZABETH-2 SAILED INTO NEW YORK YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) TO A SPECTACULAR AND ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME. AS THE GIANT SUPER-LINER SAILED UP THE HUDSON RIVER FLANKED BY A FLEET OF SMALL CRAFT, FIREBOATS SHOT CASCADES OF WATER INTO THE AIR IN SALUTE. HELICOPTERS HOVERED OVERHEAD AND BANDS PLAYED A WELCOME AS THE LINER MOVED TOWARDS ITS BERTH.

AFTER A FIVE-DAY MAIDEN VOYAGE FROM SOUTHAMPTON, THE 65,863 TON LINER MOVED SERENELY UPSTREAM SURROUNDED BY TUGS, COAST GUARD CUTTERS AND OTHER SMALL CRAFT DECKED OUT WITH FLAGS AND PENNANTS.

NEW YORK MAYOR, JOHN LINDSAY, WHO OFFICIALLY PROCLAIMED YESTERDAY "QUEEN ELIZABETH DAY" BOARDED THE LINER AS IT ENTERED THE HUDSON.

HE JOINED THE 1400 PASSENGERS AND 928 CREWMEMBERS WHO WATCHED FROM THE SHIP AS NEW YORK ACCORDED IT AN EMOTIONAL WELCOME.

THE RIGHT ROYAL RECEPTION WAS IN MARKED CONTRAST TO THE FIRST ARRIVAL IN NEW YORK OF THE FIRST QUEEN ELIZABETH WHICH SLIPPED INTO HARBOUR IN WARTIME SECRECY ON MARCH 7, 1940.

AS THE QE-2 -- AS THE SHIP HAS BEEN NICKNAMED -- MADE ITS TRIUMPHANT ENTRY INTO NEW YORK, HER BUILDERS, UPPER CLYDE SHIPBUILDERS WERE BATTLING WITH THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT FOR GBP12-MILLION IN GOVERNMENT AID.

UPPER CLYDE SHIPBUILDERS CLAIM THAT UNLESS THEY OBTAIN THE GOVERNMENT AID THEY WILL HAVE TO GO INTO LIQUIDATION. THIS WOULD LEAVE 15-THOUSAND WORKERS WITHOUT EMPLOYMENT.

THE TROUBLES BEGAN LAST CHRISTMAS WITH THE PROBLEMS OVER THE QE-2'S TURBINES AND HAVE NOW CROWN TO A CRESCENDO PITCH.

BUT TROUBLES WITHSTANDING, YESTERDAY WAS QE-2'S DAY IN NEW YORK.
