  • Description

The Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian Smith and the African nationalist leader Joshua Nkomo agreed on Thursday (11 December) to seek a settlement on the future of the country through constitutional talks.

Earlier, Mr. Nkomo told journalists at his home in Bulawayo that he was going to discuss with Mr. Smith a constitution that would have to be acceptable to all Rhodesians -- "all seven-and-a-half-million of them."
Thursday's meeting was the fifth preparatory get together between the two sides.

On the central issue of black government Mr. Nkomo insists he wants "majority rule now." Mr. Smith has meanwhile once more rejected immediate majority rule as "quite unacceptable".

Opinion among blacks is divided over whether Mr. Nkomo even has the right to negotiate on their behalf. One faction of the divided African National Council led from Zambia by Bishop Abel Muzorewa totally rejects Mr. Nkomo's claim to the A.N.C. leadership and his dealings with Mr. Smith. It says that it will never accept a Smith-Nkomo settlement.

Supporters of the Muzorewa faction were scant among the crowds outside Mr. Smith's office on Thursday while supporters of the Nkomo faction sang and clapped. A few whites also turned up. Some of them said there was an air of unreality about the moves after more than 12 years of rule by the Rhodesian Front. A typical remarks: "Few of us are conditioned to the idea of handing over government to the blacks."
Mr. Nkomo's final comment before Thursday's talks was that was ;the only alternative to a constitutional settlement.
