  • Description

President Ngarta Tombalbaye of Chad met French President Valery Giscard D'Estaing at Elysee Palace on Wednesday (20 November) in Paris.

President Tombalbaye was on a private visit to France -- the first since 1972 when relations between the two countries became strained, after France withdrew its troops from Chad at the end of 1972. The French anti-insurgency troops had been in Chad or three years to help quell a rebellion.

President Tombalbaye later told reporters that the fact that he had not visit France since 1972 did not mean that there had been a split in the relations between Chad and France.

He was due to stay in paris for a week. He arrived on Monday (18 November) from Rabat, the capital of Morocco.
