  • Description

President Moktar Ould Daddah of Mauritania attended an international exhibition in the capital, Nouakchott, on Monday (10 March) to mark International Women's Year.

The exhibition, sponsored by the Mauritanian Supreme Council of Women, includes exhibits provided by various foreign delegations including France, North Korea, China and Rumania.

President Ould Daddah had opened the week-long exhibition on Saturday (8 March) which was International Women's Day.

In his opening address, the President had stressed that the women of the Third World "should achieve complete liberation in all spheres," adding that "it is a grave error to reduce the Third World women's profound aspirations for freedom and dignity to petty feminism."
"Like all of our people, she too should fight on all fronts against obscurantism," he said, singling out "our Islamic religion which recognises no other role for a woman other than as the shadow of a man."
During his tour of the exhibition, the President, accompanied by his wife, visited the Rumanian stand and saw many other exhibits illustrating the participation of women in production and social activities.
