    IN SANDAKAN, THE LARGEST TOWN OF SABAH, THE RIVER IS THE "HIGHWAY" FOR THE PEOPLE LIVING IN SCATTERED WOODEN AND ATTAP HUTS ALONG THE BANK.

    MOTOR LAUNCHES ARE THE QUICKEST FORM OF TRANSPORTATION FOR THEM.

    AS THE ECONOMY OF SABAH DEVELOPS AND THE PRODUCTS OF THE NEW AGRICULTURAL SCHEMES OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS BEGINS TO MATERIALIZE; THE SABAH GOVERNMENT EXPECTS TO INCREASE EXPORT TRADE -- PARTICULARLY TIMBER. THIS MEANS THAT THE PORT AND HARBOUR FACILITIES MUST BE DEVELOPED TO KEEP PACE WITH THE GREATER DEMANDS.

    A GROUP OF GOVERNMENT RURAL DEVELOPMENT EXPERTS RECENTLY TRAVELLED BY BOAT TO A NEW VILLAGE. THEY CARRIED CUT SURVEY WORK WITH A VIEW OF DEVELOPING CERTAIN AREAS OF THE VILLAGE.

    MEANWHILE, IN THE HEART OF SANDAKAN TOWN, NEW TALL BUILDINGS ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND IN THE OUTSKIRTS, BULLDOZERS ARE CLEARING AND LEVELLING LAND FOR HOUSING ESTATES AND NEW ROADS.
