  • Description

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH THAT WAS THE SYMBOL OF WOUNDED KNEE'S INDIAN OCCUPATION HAD SINCE BURNED DOWN. THE CENTER OF TOWN IS DESERTED WITH THE TRADING POST BURNED DOWN AND HOUSES BOARDED UP. SOME NEW HOUSES ARE BEING BUILT, UNDER A FORMERLY STALLED GOVERNMENT PROJECT WHILE OTHER RESIDENTS LIVE IN TRAILERS HOPING TO RECLAIM THEIR HOUSES. RICHARD WILSON OF THE OGLALA SIOUX SAYS HIS TRIBE AT THE PINE RIDGE RESERVATION SAYS THE OCCUPATION HURT BECAUSE TWO BUSINESSES THAT WERE GOING TO LOCATE THERE WERE SCARED OFF, AND MILITANT LEADER DENNIS BANKS SAYS IN THE LONG RUN THE OCCUPATION DIDN'T PROVE ANYTHING. TOURISTS STILL ARRIVE, TO LOOK AT THE BURNED OUT CHURCH AND THE MASS GRAVE BEHIND IT THAT MARKS THE MASSACRE OF SIOUX INDIANS THAT TOOK PLACE IN 1890.
