  • Description

A 252,000 deadweight-ton mammoth tanker, the Texaco "Great Britain", was launched at Wallsend-on-Tyne today (Friday) by Mrs. Eddins McNealy, wife of the texaco Vice-President in charge of Refining for Europe, Latin America and West Africa.

The "Great Britain" has been named in tribute to a vessel of the same name built by the Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1843. The first "Great Britain" was the largest vessel in the world when it was launched - and incorporated for the first time many features which are today standard in ship construction: propeller-drive, watertight bulkheads, double bottom and the largest of her time to be built of iron.
