  • Description

The body of west German ambassador Count Karl Von Spreti was to be flown home today (April 8) after initial services in Guatemala City.

The Count's body was found Sunday in a mud hut 12 miles from Guatemala City. The Count was killed by guerrillas after the Guatemalan government failed to meet their demands for his release. They wanted 22 political prisoners released and GBP700,000 (in U.S. dollars) in ransom money.

The Guatemalan foreign minister accompanied the ambassador's widow to the funeral home where the Count's body reposed in Guatemala City. And the president of Guatemala came under heavy guard to pay his respects.

The diplomatic corps in Guatemala City is reported to be seriously considering asking their governments to withdrawn them because of the Count's murder.
