  • Description

D-DAY PLUS TWENTY-FIVE YEARS. ON THE BEACHES OF NORMANDY (FRANCE), WHERE THE FIRST LANDINGS OF THE ALLIED LIBERATION FORCES TOOK PLACE, SOME OF THE MEN WHO MADE THEM AND SURVIVED, HAVE COME BACK TO REMEMBER AND HONOUR THOSE WHO DIED.

ALL ALONG THE TWENTY-FOUR MILE STRETCH WHERE 156,000 MEN LANDED, THE FLAGS OF THEIR NATIONS - BRITISH, AMERICAN AND CANADIAN - ARE FLYING. THE THREE DAYS OF THE COMMEMORATION - THE LARGEST SINCE THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY IN 1954 - ARE ALLOTTED ONE TO EACH COUNTRY.

TODAY (JUNE 6), THE ACTUAL ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST LANDING, BELONGS MOSTLY TO THE BRITISH. YESTERDAY, IT WAS THE TURN OF THE AMERICANS.

AT THE BEACHES WHERE THE AMERICAN FIRST ARMY MADE ITS FIRST LANDINGS - STILL KNOWN UNDER THEIR CODE NAMES OF "OMAHA" AND "UTAH" - OFFICIALS AND SOLDIERS GATHERED TO COMMEMORATE THEIR FALLEN COMRADES. GENERAL OMAR BRADLEY, NOW 78, WHO LED THE FIRST ARMY UP THE BEACHES, HEADED A PARTY OF EIGHT LEADING U.S. WAR-TIME GENERALS OVER FOR THE CEREMONIES.

AT THE CEMETERY IN COLLEVILLE, ON A BLUFF, FACING THE OPEN SEA, GENERAL BRADLEY STOOD WITH AMERICAN SOLDIERS AND VETERANS' CONTINGENTS WHICH INCLUDED MEN FROM THE BRITISH ROYAL AIRFORCE, AND THE FREE FRENCH FORCES, HEADED BY FRANCE'S MINISTER FOR SERVICE VETERANS, M. HENRI DUVILLARD, AS WREATHS WERE LAID FOR THE 9,000 AMERICAN SERVICEMEN WHO LIE BURIED THERE.

LATER, AT VIERVILLE, AS A MEMORIAL TO THE AMERICAN NATIONAL GUARD WAS UNVEILED ON THE ONAHA BEACH, M. TRIBOULET, GENERAL DE GAULLE'S FIRST COMMISSIONER FOR THE LIBERATED TERRITORIES, DECLARED THAT THE FLAGS OF ALL THE 5 STATES OF THE UNION FLYING THERE REPRESENTED THE HUGE COHORTS WHICH HAD COME TO DELIVER FRANCE AND EUROPE 25 YEARS AGO.
