  • Description

INTRODUCTION: The West Germany Foreign Minister, Hans Dietrich Genscher, arrived in Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, on Saturday (23 April) for talks with the country's leaders.

SYNOPSIS: Herr Genscher was greeted at the airport by a large number of officials, including some from the Sri Lankan Department of Trade. West Germany is one of Sri Lanka's major trading partners and trade prospects were expected to be discussed during Herr Genscher's two day visit. The Foreign Minister was also met by the leader of the Sri Lankan parliament, Mr Matripala Senayake.

Shortly after his arrival, Herr Genscher and his party were driven to the President's House for talks with President William Gopallawa. West Germany supported the initiative of the non-aligned countries, which includes Sri Lanka, to convene a special meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss disarmament and co-sponsored a resolution to that effect. The two men discussed that move.

Herr Genscher then had talks with Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike. These covered bilateral relations, international issues of common interest and prospects for better economic relations between developed and developing countries. Herr Genscher told Mrs Bandaranaike a world of peaceful co-existence and stable economic co-operation could only be reacted and preserved if decent living conditions were achieved for everyone.
