  • Description

Pope Paul performed the traditional rite of washing and kissing the feet of 12 child polio victims during a Maundy Thursday (11 April) Mass at the Lateran Basilica of St. John in the Vatican City.

The Pope appeared fit as he performed the ceremony, which recalls Christ's washing of the feet of the 12 apostles as a symbol of humility and purification.

The Pope has had to cancel various Easter Week duties as a result of a recent bout of influenza, but he will still carry a wooden cross from the Colosseum to Aventine Hill in Rome in memory of Christ's ordeal on his way to Calvary.
