The venue for the winter olympics skating competition has received a major test during the Norton pre-olympic figure skating competitions. The titles were decided in a day of incident on the rinks.

SYNOPSIS: The winter olympics are scheduled to open in less than five months, and lake Placid is confident it will be prepared.

The East German pair of Tassilo Thierbach and Sabine Baesz ere tipped for top honours in the pairs. They won the world bronze medal in Vienna in March this year (1979) and their form has been getting even better since. A fall by Baesz was not penalty enough to prevent them going on to win. They retrieved the situation to the delight of the crowd.

There is a complex scoring system, and the East German pair had been consistent enough to win them the title.

The United States had a good day, picking up medals in the way in which they have become accustomed in the Olympics. The Carruthers team from the U.S. performed this crowd-pleasing routine to take the silver.

The number of falls in these events caused surprises but he biggest upset of all came when Scott Hamilton of the United States overtook former world champion Jan Hoffman of East Germany to win the Senior Men's title. Hoffman was another one to tumble, and when he did so he fell to third place, allowing this performance from Hamilton to dazzle the judges with combination jumps and almost flawless skating.
