Background: The continuing battle for Phnom Penh was intensified on Thursday (30 January) as Communist-led insurgents stepped up their rocket attacks on the beleaguered capital, killing two persons and wounding 12.

Military observers said the increasingly heavy rocket raids on Phnom Penh -- and most recently on its Pochentong International Airport -- indicated that the insurgents were intent on maintaining control of an arc within striking distance of the capital.

The insurgents already hold a large area on the east bank of the Mekong River only two miles (three kilometres) east of Phnom Penh, as well as the region directly south of the city.

The heavy insurgent gunfire has made the journey up the Mekong so hazardous that the crews of several freighters loaded with relief supplies for the capital have refused to sail from South Vietnam.

On Thursday (30 January) alone, two oil tankers were destroyed by insurgent gunners -- but two other tankers and four barges carrying rice and ammunition got through.
