Background: SPAIN, ONE OF THE WORLD'S SOCCER GIANTS, ARE AMONG THE 16 NATIONS WHICH WILL COMPETE FOR THE WORLD'S CUP IN ENGLAND NEXT JULY. THEY QUALIFIED FOR A PLACE WHEN THEY BEAT THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND 1-0 IN A PLAY-OFF IN PARIS LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY).

THE DECIDING GOAL CAME TEN MINUTES FROM THE END. IT WAS THE CLIMAX TO A MATCH OF TREMENDOUS PACE, MARRED ONLY BY SOME OUTBURSTS OF TEMPER. MOST OF THE 35,000 CROWD WHO CRAMMED INTO THE PARC DES PRINCES WERE CHEERING FOR THE SPANIARDS.

IRELAND, A SOCCER DWARF IN COMPARISON, MATCHED SPAIN FOR COURAGE AND ENERGY, BUT THEIR FORWARDS LACKED THE TEAMWORK OF SPAIN'S. BUT FOR THE IRISH DEFENCE THE WINNING MARGIN WOULD HAVE BEEN GREATER.

SPAIN, SPEARHEADED BY INSIDE-FORWARD SUAREZ, PLAYED SUPERBLY, SPRAYING A SUCCESSION OF ACCURATE PASSES AS THEY TORE INTO ATTACK. IRISH GOALKEEPER PAT DUNNE HAD A BUSY TIME STOPPING THE BARRAGE, ABLY HELPED BY HIS FELLOW-DEFENDERS.

AS THE SECOND HALF WORE ON, IRELAND'S ATTACKS BECAME RARE AS THE SPANIARDS WENT ALL OUT FOR THE ELUSIVE GOAL. IT WAS IN THE EIGHTIETH MINUTE THAT THE SCOREBOARD WENT INTO OPERATION FOR THE FIRST TIME. UFARTE'S GOAL WAS SHOT IN FROM 20 YARDS (18 METRES).
