  • Description

IN LINE WITH A CUT IN DEFENCE COSTS ANNOUNCED EARLIER IN DECEMBER, UNITED STATES AUTHORITIES ON MONDAY ALLOWED NEWSMEN TO EXAMINE MACE B MISSILES WHICH ARE SHORTLY TO BE REMOVED FROM OKINAWA. THE MISSILES ON VIEW HAD ALREADY BEEN PARTIALLY DISMANTLED.

ON DECEMBER 15, U. S. MILITARY AUTHORITIES ANNOUNCED THAT THE REMOVAL OF ALL MACE B SURFACE-TO-SURFACE MISSILES ON OKINAWA WOULD START BEFORE THE END OF THE MONTH.

THE PRESENCE OF THE MISSILES ON OKINAWA HAS BEEN A SOURCE OF CONTROVERSY IN JAPAN. UNDER AN AGREEMENT REACHED IN NOVEMBER, THE U. S. WILL RETURN THE ISLAND TO JAPANESE RULE IN 1972.

OFFICERS OF THE 313TH AIR FORCE DIVISION REFUSED TO TELL NEWSMEN WHETHER THE MISSILES HAD BEEN EQUIPPED WITH NUCLEAR WARHEADS. IN ANY CASE, THE MACE B, WITH ITS RELATIVELY SLOW SPEED AND SHORT RANGE, IS NOW REGARDED AS OUTDATED AS A NUCLEAR DETERRENT.

THE MISSILES HAD BEEN HOUSED IN CONCRETE LAUNCHING PADS ABOUT 20 FEET (SIX METRES) UNDERGROUND. ASKED BY NEWSMEN HOW THEY INTENDED TO DISPOSE OF THE LAUNCHING PADS, THE U. S. AUTHORITIES REFUSED TO COMMENT.

THEY ALSO HAD NOTHING TO SAY ON THE ASSERTION OF THE JAPANESE SOCIALIST AND COMMUNIST PARTIES THAT THE AMERICANS MERELY INTENDED TO REPLACE OBSOLETE NUCLEAR WEAPONS WITH UP-TO-DATE ONES.
