  • Description

Canada's latest aircraft - the delta wing supersonic jet fighter that has twice the power of the world's biggest liner - is unveiled in Toronto, at the AVRO Aircraft plant. Among the thousands of people attending the ceremony were members of the Diplomatic Corps in Ottawa. The Minister of Defense, George Pearkes, told his audience that he didn't think that guided missiles could relate the defensive and deterrent need of such aircraft as the CF 105 for years.

The huge new fighter will not be flown until the end of the year. Right now, it is powered by American Pratt and Whitney engines, but later a Canadian-built engine will be substituted. As for its size, it is as big as a four-engined air liner, and has a speed of one thousand four hundred miles an hour. With this plane, Canada becomes the seventh country to produce faster-than-sound fighter aircraft.
