Background: Economic revolution has become the keynote of life in Algier--and "Revolution agraire"--land reform--is currently the main topic in local newspapers and meeting places. For since the bitter struggle for Independence more than a decade ago and President Houari Boumedienne's rise to power in 1965, the accent has been on social improvement.

There has been a major re-distribution of land and much more attention is now being paid to scientific principles in farming. Allied with the agricultural programme is an industrialisation project--and chemical fertilisers are now considered as vital for the production of good crops as ploughs.

This Visnews film shows a chemical fertiliser plant at Arzew about 400 kilometres (250 miles) west of Algiers, as well as the site of a farming village being built at El Melah, 50 kilometres (32 miles) farther west.
