  • Description

BURSTING FROM THE SEA -- A NEW PIECE OF THE WORLD, OFF THE COAST OF ICELAND. A VOLCANIC ISLAND OF PUMICE AND LAVA, IT HASN'T YET SEEN ACTUALLY SEEN: SHROUDED AS IT IS IN A MASS OF SMOKE AND VAPOUR RISING SEVERAL MILES INTO THE AIR.

ICELANDIC COASTGUARD VESSELS, WITH SCIENTISTS ABOARD, HAVE GOT TO WITHIN 500 YARDS (457 METRES) OF THE ERUPTION. BUT ALL OTHER SHIPS ARE BEING WARNED TO KEEP CLEAR IN CASE OF DANGER FROM UNEXPECTED FLOOD WAVES. USING RADAR, THE COASTGUARDS HAVE DETERMINED THE ISLAND'S SIZE. THEY SAY IT IS AT LEAST 500 YARDS (457 METRES) LONG AND 130 FEET (40 METRES) ABOVE SEA LEVEL.

CONSTANT WATCH IS BEING KEPT FOR FEAR OF A NEW EXPLOSION. SCIENTISTS SAY THAT THIS MIGHT CAUSE A TIDAL WAVE WHICH COULD ENGULF MUCH OF SOUTHERN ICELAND 17 MILES (27KM) DISTANT. SOME 10 MILES (16KM) AWAY ARE THE WESTERN ISLANDS, WHERE 4,000 PEOPLE LIVE -- BUT THEY ARE PROTECTED BY HIGH CLIFFS.

SINCE LAST FRIDAY (NOV 15), WHEN THE ISLAND FIRST APPEARED, HUNDREDS HAVE FLOWN FROM REYKJAVIK TO SEE THE LATEST ADDITION TO THEIR COUNTRY. BUT WHETHER IT STAYS, OR DISAPPEARS, NO ONE YET CAN SAY.
