    INTRODUCTION: President Walter Scheel of West Germany said on Monday (14 March) that West Germany was worried about developments in southern Africa and the danger of outside intervention there.

    SYNOPSIS: President Scheel was speaking at the start of a five-day state visit to West Germany by the President of Rwanda, Major General Juvenal Habyalimani. Recalling that Rwanda had been part of the German East Africa territories in the last century, President Scheel said West Germany's aim now was to strengthen Africa's political and economic independence.

    He said the West Germans were closely following developments in southern Africa and the danger of outside intervention there.

    President Habyarimana also had talks with Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and met the heads of African diplomatic missions at the house in which he is staying near Bonn. During his visit, the Rwandan leader will tour West Berlin.
