Background: Congo President Joseph Kasavubu returned in triumph to Leopoldville Nov. 27, wildly cheered by more than 100,000 Congolese. He had been to New York, U.S.A., where he gained recognition for his delegation in the United Nations General Assembly.

Women and children with boquets waited for his arrival at Ndjili Airport near Leopoldville.... and so did an array or prominent personalities. Colonel Mobutu, the Congo Army leader, was there; and he inspected the guard of honour, Mr. Dayal, chief U.N. representative in the Congo, came by helicopter. Also at the airport were General Rikhye, chief U.N. military adviser; Monseigneur Scalais, Roman Catholic Bishop of Leopoldville; and Mr. Ileo, Prime Minister in the new Kasavubu Cabinet.

President Kasavubu was resplendent in his white general's uniform as Commander-in-Chief of the Congolese Army when he stepped from the Belgian jet plane. He was greeted by Colonel Mobutu and Foreign Minister Justin Bomboko (among others). After inspecting a guard of honour, President Kasavubu and Mr. Bomboko drove into Leopoldville, about 14 miles from the airport, through jubilant crowds.
