Beneath floodlights at the Parc des Princes, Paris, Nov 30, Rheims beat Burnley, British League champions, by three goals to two. But as Burnley won their first-leg meeting in England two weeks ago by two goals to nil, Burnley will go through to the quarter finals of the European Cup on aggregate.
Tension, of course, was great from the kick-off, and built up steadily. The passionate crowd roared ceaselessly as Rheims strove desperately to survive in this great money-spinning competition, in which they have twice reached the final.
Robson, Burnley's inside-left, opened the scoring when in the 32nd minute he hammered in a rebound off the bar. This infused extra fighting spirit into the French team, but it was not until five minutes after half-time that Piantoni, Rheims' inside-left, equalised. Rodzik, Rheims' left-back, put them one goal in the lead when he lobbed a loose ball past goalkeeper Blacklaw.
Burnley outside-right Connelly brought the score level again in the 75th minute when he raced 50 yards through the Rheims defence out to the left wing then beat goalkeeper Jacquet with a curling shot.
Even then Rheims refused to surrender. Two minutes after Connelly's goal, the powerful Rodzik again scored with a rising shot from inside the Burnley penalty-area.
