  • Description

The leader of Portuguese Timor's leftist Fretilin Independence Movement, President Francisco Xavier Do Amaral, has said he fears Indonesia will invade his country.

Fretilin--Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor--claims it now controls most of the country after two months of heavy fighting against other independence forces.

Fretilin claimed earlier this week that their forces had driven back pro-Indonesian forces that allegedly crossed from West Timor and attacked the town of Batugade.

In the Indonesian capital, Djakarta, the government claimed that the pro-Indonesian forces had occupied Batugade and were preparing to "liberate all Portuguese Timor".

But after the violence and damage of the recent civil war Fretilin has other troubles besides a suspected invasion from Indonesia. The country is economically run down and is in desperate need of an efficient government.
