Background: Quit notices to non-citizen traders in Kenya expired on May 31st in most cases, except where government dispensation has been given to allow the shopkeepers to continue trading.

Those shopkeepers, mainly Asians, who have not succeeded in selling their businesses, were required to shut up shop anyway on that date. In only 32 ceases had appeals against closure orders been allowed. Closure orders had been issued to 222 non-citizen traders.

Shopkeepers had considerable difficulty in finding buyers for their businesses, largely because of the shortage of Africans with sufficient financial resources to buy.
