    THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE NAVY'S STRENGTH HAS RECEIVED A NEW BOOST WITH THE HANDING OVER OF THREE SMALL WARSHIPS FROM THE UNITED STATES. THE FORMAL CEREMONY TOOK PLACE LAST WEDNESDAY BEFORE A GATHERING OF SENIOR AMERICAN, SOUTH VIETNAMESE AND FOREIGN MILITARY OFFICERS AT THE SOUTH VIETNAM NAVY HEADQUARTERS ON THE SAIGON RIVER.

    THE THREE SHIPS ARE LARGE AMPHIBIOUS SUPPORT SHIPS, OF A TYPE ALREADY IN SERVICE WITH THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE NAVY. THEY HAVE A DISPLACEMENT OF 227 TONS AND AN OVERALL LENGTH OF 158 FEET (47 METRES). THEIR ARMAMENT INCLUDES ONE THREE-INCH GUN AND FOUR 40-MILLIMETRE AND FOUR 20 MILLIMETRE GUNS. THEY HAVE A SPEED OF JUST OVER 14 KNOTS.

    MAJOR-GENERAL WILLIAM ROSSON, U.S. CHIEF OF STAFF, REPRESENTED GENERAL WESTMORELAND, AMERICA'S COMMANDER IN VIETNAM, AND SIGNED THE AGREEMENT HANDING OVER THE THREE WARSHIPS. AFTERWARDS, HE INSPECTED THE SHIPS WHICH WILL BE USED TO SUPPORT GROUND TROOPS IN ACTION.
