  • Description

STUDENTS OF ATHENS UNIVERSITY, GREECE, STAGED A HUGE ANTI-GOVERNMENT RALLY IN THE UNIVERSITY COURTYARD, APRIL 6. POLICE WHERE OUT IN FORCE; BUT DID NOT INTERVENE BECAUSE STUDENTS ARE GRANTED FREEDOM OF ACTION IN THE COURTYARD.

THE STUDENTS PLACED THE GREEK FLAG AND THE NUMBER "114" ON THE STATUE OF PRESIDENT CAPODESTRIAS, FIR GREEK PRIME MINISTER AND FOUNDER OF THE UNIVERSITY. THE NUMBER REPRESENTS ARTICLE 114 OF THE GREEK CONSTITUTION WHICH SAYS THAT "EVERYONE IS LEFT FREE AND AT HIS OWN INITIATIVE TO ACT SHOULD THE DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS BE ENDANGERED".

THEY PROTESTED AGAINST GOVERNMENT RESTRICTIONS ON STUDENTS AND "BRUTAL POLICE VIOLENCE" DURING CLASHES THE PREVIOUS WEEK WHEN SOME 20 STUDENTS HAD TO BE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL. AN OPPOSITION MOTION WAS INTRODUCED INTO PARLIAMENT ABOUT THE "VIOLENCE" OTHER BANNERS AND SHOUTS EXCLAIMED: "DOWN WITH KARAMANLIS", "GREEK GOVERNMENT, TRAITORS OF THE CYPRUS AFFAIR", "WE WANT CYPRUS", AND "DOWN WITH FASCIST GREEK POLICE".

WHEN SOME OF THE STUDENTS LEFT THE COURTYARD FOR A PARADE THROUGH THE STREETS, POLICE RAN AFTER THEM TO BREAK UP THE MARCH AND PREVENT FURTHER DEMONSTRATIONS.
