  • Description

In Iran on Monday (19 March), thousand of uniformed servicemen paraded to show their solidarity with the Islamic revolution which toppled the Shah. The demonstrations took place in several centres throughout the country, but the biggest was in Teheran.

SYNOPSIS: The majority of Iran's 500,000 armed forces deserted during or after the revolution earlier this year. But on Monday (19 March) an estimated 10,000 servicemen marched through Teheran's city streets to pledge their support for the Ayatollah Khomeini. Two air force fighter planes screamed overhead and a dozen helicopters buzzed low over the city centre as the armed forces paraded in sic or seven separated groups.

There was a carnival atmosphere in Teheran with a military band playing, and bystanders showering the soldiers with confetti and flowers. Soldiers and civilians chanted in unison slogans proclaiming their support for the revolution.

Some correspondents remarked that there was little sign of military equipment. On the day of the parades Assistant Premier Amir Entezam said much of the Air Force was grounded through insufficient spares and maintenance.
