  • Description

At the start of a three day visit to France on Monday (26 April) Brazilian President General Ernesto Geisel called for closer links with France.
General Geisel and his wife arrived at Orly airport near Paris and were met by French President Valery Giscard D'Estaing and other government officials. It is the Brazilian President's first trip to Europe.
Soon after his arrival the two leaders started a round of talks dealing with major economic development projects including the construction of hydro-electric dams with possible French technological assistance.
Later, in an interview with the conservative newspaper Le Figaro, General Geisel said he hoped to gain France's support in persuading the European Common Market to adopt a more liberal attitude towards Brazilian exports.
However, Reuters say that the visit could be marred by protests and planned left-wing demonstrations against General Geisel. France's biggest trade union, Confederation General du Travail (CGT), has publicly denounced him as"a dictator leading a region of terror".
As a precaution the French police have instituted tight security for the duration of the visit.
