  • Description

With the annual vacation exodus well under-way, thousands of motorists face an extra hazard in the Paris area -- thirty-one large scale road works -- which are causing huge traffic jams.

A spokesman for the French Ministry of Public Works explained that August -- the time when most Frenchmen take their annual holidays -- was the most convenient month for the roads programme.

Several Paris tourist points are affected, including the world famous Place de la Concorde, where motorists wait for hours to pass.

The jams have been increased by major works at many key road junctions as most Parisians appear to be heading for the south-of-France.

The Minister for Public Works, M. Robert Galley, who is responsible for the programme, said that there had also been a twenty-per-cent increase in the traffic over the same time last year.

He claimed that however his ministry organised the road-works, no system could hope to cope with the problem.

But the French police has one answer: they blamed the huge queues on the number of foreign tourists.
