  • Description

During the next three months 180 Royal Air Force officers will spend four days and nights high in the snow-capped mountains built themselves as part of the rigorous training at the 2cnd Tactical Air Force Winter Survuval School.

The school teaches survuval techniques to air crew who might find themselves stranded in remote mountain areas where, without such training, men might die in the deep snow within a few minutes. 4,000 feet up they learn how to make wigwams from parachutes, how to improvise the harnesses to make fishing nets, how to catch rabbits for food. They are being taught, also, to move about on skis and part of their training is a cross-country hike of several miles.

It's a tough course that could save many airmen from a grim death through exposure. It's so tough, in fact, that before they are selected for the course, each of the officers is given one months physical training to toughen him up, and a final medical examination.
