Background: For millions of Hindus in India, the festival of Dussehra forms an annual reminder of the victory of good over evil.

Dussehra day climaxes ten days of celebrations in which the story of the Hindu God Rama and his victory over the demon king Ravana is told in processions through the streets.

According to legend, Ravana abducted Rama's wife. Sita, and took her to his mountain stronghold in Sir Lanka. Rama, with the help of his brother Laksmana and the monkey god Hunaman, rescued his wife and killed Ravana, the demon king's son Megnath and his brother Kumbha karna.

Rama and his wife Sita are extolled as personifications of chivalry and chastity.

Hundreds of thousands of Delhi citizens lined the streets this week to watch the processions, plays showing the fight between Rama and Ravana and the burning of effigies.
