  • Description

The wife of South Vietnam's President Nguyen Van Thieu presided over the celebration of international Women's Day on Saturday (10 March) in Saigon. Madame Thieu addressed a speech to the women of Vietnam and a group of schoolgirls who had formed an honour guard for her arrival.

The observation of the day in Saigon's Tao Dan Park included a march past of women's organisations and armed forces and the presentation of diplomas to the winner of cookery competition and the woman judged South Vietnam's widow of the year. Female high school students acted a play portraying the lives of the Trung sisters, who are revered in Vietnam for their part in resisting an invasion in the country's early history. After the invasion, in which the husband of one sister was killed, the Trung sisters recruited other women to a military force in the north, which helped repel the invaders. In a second invasion, the sisters and their force were defeated and the two Trungs committed suicide in a river.

Commemoration of the Trung sisters is a major feature of the celebration of International Women's Day at shrines throughout the country.
