  • Description

DAR-ES-SALAAM, THE TANGANYIKAN CAPITAL, IS NOW BACK TO NORMAL FOLLOWING LAST MONDAY'S AMY MUTINY. ON WEDNESDAY. THE FIRST AIRCRAFT TO TOUCH DOWN FOR THREE DAYS ARRIVED AT THE CAPITAL'S AIRPORT.

IT LEFT SOON AFTERWARDS, TAKING THE FAMILIES OF BRITISH SERVICEMEN WHO HAD BEEN SACKED FROM THE TANGANYIKA RIFLES. THEY WERE FLOWN TO NAIROBI, AND LATER ON TO LONDON. CONTROL TOWER STAFF WERE ON DUTY AS USUAL. THE PREVIOUS DAY THEY HAD BEEN THREATENED BY THE MUTINEERS WITH ARREST.

IN THE CITY ITSELF, THE SITUATION WAS JUST LIKE ANY NORMAL WEEKDAY. FLOWER SELLERS WERE BACK AT THEIR CORNERS. WHILE IT WAS BUSINESS AS USUAL IN THE MARKET AREA.

IT WAS THE SAME STORY IN THE HARBOUR AND ALONG THE WATERFRONT. IN FACT, DAR-ES-SALAAM SEEMED TO BE THE "HAVEN OF PEACE," AS ITS NAME MEANS.

DURING THE REVOLT, THERE HAD BEEN RUMOURS THAT PRESIDENT NYERERE HAD BEEN DETAINED BY THE ARMY. BUT ON TUESDAY NIGHT HE BROADCAST TO THE NATION, AND YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) HE TURNED UP AT A PRESS CONFERENCE. ALSO THERE WAS MR. OSCAR KAMBONO, THE MINISTER FOR EXTERNAL AFFAIRS AND DEFENCE.

HE SAID THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE ARMY AND SOME OF THE POPULATION, WHO LOOTED SHOPS, WAS "DISGRACEFUL". IT WOULD BE FOOLISH TO PRETEND THAT THE MUTINY HAD NOT DAMAGED THE COUNTRY'S REPUTATION OVERSEAS, HE SAID.

HE "ABSOLUTELY" DENIED THERE WAS ANY LINK BETWEEN THE MUTINY AND THE COUP IN ZANZIBAR. NOW, HE ADDED, "WE HAVE TO RESTORE CONFIDENCE IN OUR COUNTRY AND WIN BACK THE REPUTATION WE HAD AS A PEACEFUL AND MATURE COUNTRY."
