  • Description

Opening the sixth General Conference of the ruling United National Independence Party, in Mulungushi on Saturday, (8 May) President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia traced the aims and objectives of the party in providing the future guidelines for the country. Dr. Kaunda hopes the meeting of 6,000 delegates will approve a new constitution and elect new officers. Nearly two years ago amid bitter inter-tribal wrangling, President Kaunda suspended the original constitution and dismissed the party's central committee. He has just completed a strenuous tour of Zambia looking for support for his proposals. The new constitution aims at trying to make certain that delegates and officers are elected on a national rather than tribal basis.
