  • Description

The racing sprint of the titles - the Men's 110 yards freestyle- brought Jon Konrads and John Devitt together, with Konrads trained by his coach, Don Talbert, to nudge Jeff Shipton of New South Wales out of second place. Devitt was tipped to win with the short distance strange to world champion Konrads.

From the start, Devitt seemed set to burn out the rest of the field but there was to be an even bigger shock.

On the far side it was Erickson, Queensland, in lane one, then Shipton, Konrads and Devitt, and the Queensland pair webster and Mahoney nearest the camera in five and six.

Devitt swam an amazing first lap of 25.4 seconds, but in the last thirty yards, Konrads passes devitt and goes on to victory and a clean sweep of all the freestyle titles in the Men's Championships.

His time of 55.9 was .8 outside the world record, but his fastest ever - placing him amongst the fastest three swimmers in the world. Only four other men have performed Konrads' feat - winning all five freestyle titles; - the last being the late John Marshall.
