    The Soviet Union's Foreign Minister Andrei Gromko held talks with Syria's President Hafez Assad in Damascus on Thursday (28 February).

    Mr. Gromyko arrived in Damascus a few days after the departure of the United States Security of State, Dr. Kissinger. Dr. Kissinger had secured an Israeli prisoners list from President Assad, a step towards settlement of territorial differences between the two countries.

    The talks between President Assad and Mr. Gromyko are believed by diplomatic observers to have centered on relations between the two countries, and the Soviet Union's statement last year that an Soviet armss for Syria would have to be paid for inc ash. Other developments in the Middle East relating to both oil and ArabIsrraeli differences were also discussed by the two leaders.

    Mr. Gromyko flew from Damascus to Cairo in Egypt the following day (Friday March 1).
