  • Description

THE Q4 --- THE LATEST SHIP TO BE BUILT FOR THE CUNARD LINE WHICH OWNS THE QUEEN ELIZABETH AND THE QUEEN MARY --- IS EXPECTED TO BY READY FOR LAUNCHING IN SEPTEMBER. RECENTLY TRIALS WERE CARRIED OUT ON A MODEL OF THE NEW SHIP.

THE NEW Q4 IS SMALLER THAN EITHER OF HER TWO SISTER SHIPS -- BUT SHE WILL BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN THE SAME SPEEDS. AT 58,000 TONS SHE WILL BE THE LARGEST PASSENGER LINER TO BE BUILT IN BRITAIN SINCE THE QUEEN ELIZABETH. WHICH IS 83,000 TONS.

HER OVERALL LENGTH WILL BE 960FT (280 METRES) AND SHE WILL BE POWERED BY TWIN SCREW STEAM TURBINES, GIVING HER A SERVICE SPEED OF 28 1/2 KNOTS. SHE WILL CARRY 2,000 PASSENGERS.

AT THE MOMENT THE 14 IS ON THE STOCKS AT THE YARD OF JOHN BROWN IN CLYDEBANK, SCOTLAND WHERE WORKERS ARE BATTLING AGAINST TIME TO GET HER READY FOR THE LAUNCHING.

SO FAR, THE Q4 HAS NOT BEEN NAMED --- ALTHOUGH THE OWNER'S HAVE CHOSEN A NAME. THEY ARE KEEPING HER FUTURE TITLE A CLOSELY GUARDED SECRET -- WHILE THEY ATTEMPT TO REGISTER THE NAME OF PROTECT IT FROM SOUVENIR MANUFACTURERS WHO MAY CALL THEIR GOODS AFTER THE NEW SHIP.

THE Q4 WILL COST BETWEEN GBP25 MILLION AND GBP30 MILLION STERLING AND OF THIS THE GOVERNMENT HAS LENT THE CUNARD COMPANY GBP17.6 MILLION. THIS LOAN HAS TO BE REPAID WITHIN 10 YEARS.

WITH THEIR NEW SHIP, THE CUNARD COMPANY HOPES TO CAPTURE A MAJOR SHARE IN THE PROFITABLE TRANS ATLANTIC TRADE. THEY ARE TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE FACT THAT MANY BUSINESS NOW PREFER EXECUTIVES TO MAKE ONE-WAY TRIPS BY AIR AND THEN RETURN BY SEA.

SO FAR SEVERAL THOUSAND APPLICATIONS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED FROM PEOPLE WISHING TO SAIL ON THE MAIDEN VOYAGE. THE NEW SHIP WILL BE LAUNCHED BY THE QUEEN ELIZABETH ON SEPTEMBER 20. AFTER THAT, FITTING OUT WILL TAKE UP MORE THAN ANOTHER YEAR, BUT SHE IS EXPECTED TO BE READY FOR SERVICE EARLY IN 1969.

WHEN THE Q4, STILL KNOWN OFFICIALLY AS SHIP NUMBER 736, IN THE BUILDER'S YARD, COMES INTO SERVICE THE 81,000-TON QUEEN MARY, NOW 30 YEARS OLD, WILL BE WITHDRAWN FROM SERVICE.
