  • Description

PRO-PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA DISSIDENTS WHO HAVE BROKEN AWAY FROM THE MOSCOW-ORIENTED ITALIAN COMMUNIST PARTY (P.C.I) SAID YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) THAT POWER COULD BE WON ONLY BY FORCE. MORE THAN 100 DISSIDENTS CONCLUDED A THREE-DAY MEETING IN THE NORTHERN COASTAL TOWN OF LIVORNO (LEGHORN) WHICH SET UP A NEW "ITALIAN MAXIST LENINIST COMMUNIST PARTY" TO RIVAL SIGNOR LUIGI LONGO'S 1,600,000-MEMBER P.C.I.

SPEAKERS AT THE FINAL MEETING OF THE SPLIN-ER GROUP SAID SIGNOR LONGOS'S PARTY HAD LOST ITS REVOLUTIONARY FERVOUR AND WAS TRYING TO GAIN POWER THROUGH ELECTIONS. NEVERTHELESS, THE SPLINTER GROUP DENIES HAVING ANY DIRECT LINK WITH THE CHINESE COMMUNISTS.

THE P.C.I., WHICH CONTROLS THE LIVORNO TOWN COUNCIL, HELD A COUNTER-DEMONSTRATION, ATTENDED BY 1,500 PERSONS, AT THE MUNICIPAL THEATRE. SPEAKERS INCLUDED MR GUS HALL, SECRETARY OF THE UNITED STATES COMMUNIST PARTY, WHO SAID AMERICANS WERE TIRED OF FIGHTING "PRESIDENT JOHNSON'S DIRTY WAR" IN VIETNAM. A P.C.I. OFFICIAL ACCUSED THE DISSIDENTS OF VANDALISM AT A LOCAL COMMUNIST SHRINE. HE SAID A YOUTH TRIED TO REMOVE THE NAME OF THE LATE PALMIRO TOGLIATTI, SIGNOR LONGO'S PREDECESSOR, FROM A PLAQUE COMMEMORATING THE FOUNDING OF THE ITALIAN COMMUNIST PARTY IN LIVORNO IN 1921.
