  • Description

When the United States Forest Service encounter a forest fire too large for its regular fire fighters to handle it will now be able to call on air units equipped with the jet age "flying fire truck" - the C-130 Lockheed Hercules.

The standard C-130 can be converted quickly into a fire fighter with the installation of a modular airborne fire fighting system called MAFFs.

The modified C-130 flies low over endangered areas and in less than 10 seconds sprays 3,000 gallons of fire retardant on an area the size of five football fields, "fireproofing" trees and brush. The chemical used does not harm plant life but is reported to help in regrowth.

The system, when it is fully tested, will be used in those fires where life and private property are in danger.
