  • Description

MAJOR-GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON, THE FEDERAL NIGERIAN LEADER, PAID A VISIT TO THE NIGERIAN EMBASSY IN MONROVIA ON TUESDAY (19 AUGUST) TO MEET LEADERS OF THE NIGERIAN COMMUNITY DURING HIS TWO-DAY STATE VISIT TO LIBERIA. LATER, THE GENERAL AND LIBERIAN PRESIDENT WILLIAM TUBMAN SIGNED A JOINT COMMUNIQUE AT THE EXECUTIVE MANSION IN WHICH THEY SAID "THE TWO LEADERS RENEWED THEIR DETERMINATION TO WORK FOR THE RESIGNATION OF PEACE AND UNITY IN NIGERIA."
WHILE GENERAL GOWON VISITED THE EMBASSY, HE WAS GIVEN A PRESENTATION TUSK BY MEMBERS OF THE NIGERIAN COMMUNITY, INCLUDING STUDENTS IN LIBERIA. COMMUNITY LEADERS SAID THAT NIGERIANS IN LIBERIA BELIEVED IN A UNITED NIGERIA AND URGED GENERAL GOWON TO HASTEN THE RETURN OF PEACE IN THE COUNTRY. THE GENERAL TOLD THEM THAT PEACE WOULD RETURN, BUT URGED THE MEMBERS OF NIGERIAN COMMUNITY TO SHOW COMPASSION AND UNDERSTANDING FOR THOSE HOLDING DIFFERENT VIEWS.

LATER, FOLLOWING A SERIES OF TALKS WITH PRESIDENT TUBMAN, GENERAL GOWON AND THE LIBERIAN LEADER SIGNED A JOINT COMMUNIQUE. REFERRING TO THE NIGERIAN CIVIL WAR, THE COMMUNIQUE SAID "GENERAL GOWON TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO BRIEF PRESIDENT TUBMAN ON THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN THE NIGERIAN CONFLICT AND PRESIDENT TUBMAN EXPRESSED HIS CONTINUED CONCERN ABOUT THE SITUATION."
THE COMMUNIQUE ALSO DEALT AT LENGTH-ON THE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS ON A PROPOSED WEST AFRICAN COMMON MARKET PROPOSED BY GENERAL GOWON IN A DINNER SPEECH THE NIGHT BEFORE. THE TWO MEN ALSO REAFFIRMED THEIR FAITH IN THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY AND THE UNITED NATIONS AS EFFECTIVE INSTRUMENTS FOR ACHIEVING PEACE AND GOODWILL IN THE WORLD.

THE COMMUNIQUE MADE NO MENTION OF DR. NNAMDI AZIKIWE, FORMER NIGERIAN PRESIDENT AND AN IBU LEADER, WHO SAT IN FOR PART OF THE FOUR-HOUR SECRET TALKS HELD AT THE EXECUTIVE MANSION.
