    SEVENTY TRADE UNION LEADERS FROM 20 AFRICAN COUNTRIES MET IN DAR-ES-SALAAM YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) TO MAP OUT THE WHOLE FUTURE OF THE ALL-AFRICAN TRADE UNION FEDERATION (AATUF).

    THE CONGRESS IS EXPECTED TO LAST FIVE DAYS DURING WHICH TIME THE DELEGATES WILL CHOOSE A NEW HEADQUARTERS FOR AATUF. THE FEDERATION WAS BASED IN ACCRA UNTIL THE GHANA T.U.C. LEFT THE ORGANISATION TWO MONTHS AGO.

    THERE WAS A DISPLAY OF TRADITIONAL DANCING WHEN THE TANZANIAN MINISTER OF LABOUR, MR. MICHAEL KAMALAIZA ARRIVED WITH AATUF'S PRESIDENT MR. BENSADDIK, AND SECRETARY-GENERAL, MR. TETTEGAH. MR. TETTEGAH, WHO HAS BEEN SECRETARY-GENERAL OF AATUF SINCE IT WAS FOUNDED SEVEN YEARS AGO, JOINED IN SOME OF THE DANCES.

    MR. KAMALAIZA SPOKE FIRST TO THE DELEGATES AND INTRODUCED VICE-PRESIDENT KAWAWA WHO WAS TO DECLARE THE CONGRESS OPEN. MR. KAMALAIZA SAID THE CONTINGENT'S RECENT POLITICAL UPHEAVALS HAD REPERCUSSIONS ON THE TRADE UNION MOVEMENT. "WE'VE ALL WATCHED WITH PROFOUND REGRET THE FORCES OF REACTION OVERTAKING SOME OF OUR COLLEAGUES AND THE WITHDRAWAL OF THEIR NATIONAL CENTRES FROM AATUF MEMBERSHIP," HE SAID.
